Thou Shalt Not Want by Gloria Bush Smith
Heading: Is it Worth It?
Thou Shalt Not Want, the debut novel by Gloria Bush Smith, details how far a woman could possibly go to have a child since she cannot conceive. Monica Gordon is a married woman, who goes to church regularly even though her husband Reese does not. The two of them have been married for six years and after several attempts to conceive a child, Monica is informed that she is unable to carry to term. One day, a young woman named Bryn, who resembles Tyra Banks, walks into Monica’s church. The two quickly become work associates and then friends.
Over coffee Monica shares with Bryn that she is unable to have children and immediately Bryn offers to be a surrogate for Monica and her husband. Without thinking through the entire situation, Monica and her husband agree but they never sign legal paperwork. Before you know it, matters change quickly and a series of twists and turns occur. Throughout the course of the book, Monica prays to God for many things. God answered every single one of her prayers leaving her to wonder what have I gotten myself into.
Thou Shalt Not Want was an entertaining book. The only disappointment was the unanswered questions at the end. I do hope there will be a sequel so the reader can have some closure.
